People

Oh how true this is.

by Ethel Mortenson Davis

There have been
periods of time
in history
where the people
have had power,

periods of peace
where rulers
have been peaceful,
and people have had
their say.

But now,
we, as people,
have lost our power.
We are living
in a period
of war and injustice:

Like the ancient civilizations
where despots ruled
with reigns of terror
for millennium.

  1. Can’t say I agree. Things never were as good in the past as we imagine, and things aren’t so bad now as we think. The good and the bad always are mixed — it’s the proportion that differs.

On the other hand, it’s true that the 24/7 news cycle has gone from hours to minutes, and we’re constantly bombarded with the worst there is — the clickbait that makes money for the media. Yes, there are problems. But I’ve learned one lesson of value. When something awful happens, I get away from the news for a day. It’s amazing how things sort themselves out, and I spare myself the speculation and wrong information. Dealing with reality can be hard enough!

  2. I just came across this letter written by the father of one of the Nazi demonstrators in Charlottesville this weekend. I thought you’d be interested in reading it, too. Even in the darkest circumstances, there are voices that speak out with clarity. The family must be going through terrible times.

    • Your thoughtful comments are always appreciated Linda. Glad my reblog got the conversation going. As you probably realise, I have little contact at times with the media releases, yet that doesn’t release me from my care for the wider world. That link you provided is most appreciated and has been shared. But all this too, shall pass…… 🙂
