The Race that Stops a Nation – Melbourne Cup!

History has been made today – a female jockey has won Australia’s most prestigious horse race, the Melbourne Cup.

Congratulations to Michelle Payne who has today ridden the winner of the 2015 Cup – Prince of Penzance.

Women are still highly discriminated against in this male dominated field, and that makes her success even more special!

  1. Wonderful news! I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the Kentucky Derby. We have had women jockeys (not in significant numbers, though) for 40 years and they’ve done very well. I can’t imagine it’s easy for them, as the world of horse racing is full of swagger and sexism especially in the Southern U.S. My hat is off to these and other women breaking these barriers and showing that women are indeed more than capable of excelling at these and most other occupations that have been full of obstructions for women for so long.
