Fashions on the field

While it’s true that Australia’s famous horse race, the Melbourne Cup, has been and gone for the year, and with it, the wonderful array of fashion on the field, today I found another fashion on the field, quite close to home.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIf a woman rebels against high heeled shoes, she should take care to do it in a very smart hat. (George Bernard Shaw)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA“Few women have ever been able to resist the temptation to try on a hat and discover in the mirror a person they never suspected was there. A hat alters the image we have of ourselves, and the image others see as well.  For the hours we wear it, it brings out different dimension in our personality, much as a costume aids an actress in her role.”

You can flirt with a fan in your hand. You can flirt holding a cigarette, too.  But a woman can really flirt with a hat. (Dolores Foster)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALeave everyone wondering which is the more interesting piece of work…you or your hat.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI myself have 12 hats, and each one represents a different personality.  Why just be yourself? (Margaret Atwood)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA“Life is like a new hat. You don’t know if it suits you if you keep trying it on in front of your own mirror.”  Shirley McLaine.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe right hat may also enliven our imagination of the past….an old-fashioned cloche, a picture hat, or a toque trimmed with a pouf of polka-dotted veiling is just enough to make us feel as if we were living in another, romantic age.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAToday the hat wearers will be out in force: those who are comfortable in them, and those who would not feel more conspicuous if two wombats were mating on their head.

A veil can bring on more shenanigans than forgetting your silk underpants.

  1. I’m completely confused, here. I get the hat analogy, but I don’t know what I’m looking at. I see a “garlic” tag – is this a garlic plant? Is that filmy “something” caught on it, or is it a part of the plant? Either you have a plant we don’t have, or I haven’t been paying enough attention!

    • I wasn’t trying to trick you Linda. It’s a garlic plant coming into flower, and the ‘hat’ is the skin that encapsulates the mass individual florets before all the action takes place. Unless you’ve grown garlic, you’re unlikely to have seen it in flower – mostly we’re more familiar with the bottom end of the plant 🙂
