I feel that way, too. I remember as a news reporter, attending a ground-breaking for, of all things, some kind of a gas station or something years ago. I felt very annoyed when the developer just casually swept his hand towards a row of trees and commanded their removal to "improve" the view from the road or something.

I agree, the Red Delicious is not the Red Delicious of my youth. It was modified for a climate further south. Our local orchardists got conned into carrying the NEW RD and it is pulpy and tasteless but it still has the vibrant color. Thank you Monsanto!

Only a couple of days ago I was in garden with some beautiful old apple trees. I just had to pick an apple and taste it - I almost felt guilty doing so! It was a bit small and sour, but there is just something about picking a fruit off a tree and eating it that seems special. You know where the tree is growing, you can see it, feel it and imagine it through all the seasons. You can see the sunshine on the tree, look at the beautiful markings on the apple's skin and indeed look at the whole tree and see all the textures, insects and wonders that it holds.

I grabbed a pile of windfalls that had been knocked off the tree by whoever had mown under it and took the somewhat battered apples home and made a crumble. It was wonderful, you felt you could taste the whole garden in the pudding!

Indeed there are many wonderful fruit tree varieties! There are also many that are not. My intention is to encourage people to seek out those with flavour and goodness, and unfortunately, many modern varieties lack these characteristics. Nurseries that continue to grow and sell the tried and tested heritage varieties are to be commended and supported.

Matthew, I feel humbled by your words. Having read your blog, I can only say you have brought this into your life by your own means.

We appear to have similar views, and I look forward to some exchanges with you.

It isn't often a blog site stops me in my tracks with a desire to plough through the whole archive and absorb the wonderful insights to be found there. Here is one such site I hope to return to again and again. There is so much here I can learn about and take inspiration from for my journey. Thank you for suddenly appearing when I needed it.

Blessings to you.
